“The CARES Approach”
We’ve teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association to develop CARES® online training. CARES is a person-centered, easy-to-remember approach to care for any person in any situation and at any level of dementia thinking decline. CARES stands for: Connect with the Person, Assess Behavior, Respond Appropriately, Evaluate What Works, and Share with Others.
“Engaging and easy to use.”
“I am going to like this training!” That’s what one CNA said after starting one of our CARES® programs. That’s because we have taken the time to build products that are rich with media and truly interactive. You’ll have the chance to respond to situations, make choices, watch real-life video scenarios, and become actively involved in the material.
“Real people. Real situations.”
We think it’s important for your staff to learn about and experience real-world situations. That’s why we film real staff members, experts, families, and people who have dementia—we don’t use actors! Your staff is more likely to “buy in” and become engaged in the training if it is authentic. And, they’ll be better prepared if they see the real thing.
“Flexible, Convenient, and Always Available”
"Because it’s available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, your staff can access the program anywhere at any time—so night, weekend, and part-time staff members, as well as new hires, can be trained quickly, consistently, and without scheduling issues.
“The administrative tracking is awesome!”
The Administrative Tracking feature allows managers to keep track of each employee’s progress through the training as well as view reports of all employee data. Reports can be run to display each week or an entire year. These reports serve as excellent documentation for your facility and for surveyors.

The CARES® Dementia-Related Behavior program focuses on behavior of people with dementia that is hard to understand and difficult to respond to. Sometimes referred to as “challenging behavior” or “inappropriate behavior,” we use the term “dementia-related behavior” as a person-centered, respectful term that does not put blame on the person with dementia.

This product includes many easy-to-implement, non-drug strategies for reducing or eliminating this behavior.

3 modules, 3 hours

This program includes many care strategies for people in the later stages of dementia who are no longer able to perform basic activities of daily living such as brushing their teeth, dressing, or feeding themselves. Throughout the program, users see real-life examples of meaningful “activities” to do with a person in the later stages of dementia.

It is targeted to direct care staff—Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), nurses, social workers, administrators—but also contains valuable information for other facility employees—receptionists, and dietary, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, and security staff.

This program was developed for family members caring for a loved one with memory loss or dementia. Like our products designed for professionals, this program centers around the CARES Approach and offers many practical and invaluable strategies to common caregiving situations.

We suggest that facility administrators purchase a site license that includes families so that everyone (staff and families) can have a common understanding and language around the CARES Approach and dementia care.
