| What is a Bowel Care Program | |
A bowel program is a total management plan for keeping a healthy bowel. A good program addresses diet, exercise, medications, fluids, and scheduled bowel care. Bowel care is the actual procedure for triggering and assisting bowel movements on a regular basis. Remember that bowel care is just one important element of the entire bowel program. Other components, such as a varied, fiber-rich diet, are also very important.
The main benefit of doing regular bowel care is having more predictable bowel movements. Regular bowel care can prevent accidents. Obviously, this is tremendously helpful in planning work and social activities. Research suggests that a well-designed bowel program can prevent up to 99% of unplanned bowel movements and the over-filling of the colon. This, in turn, can prevent the need for a colostomy. If someone has had part of the colon removed by surgery or wears a bag for stool collection, the bowel care will be different. It's discussed in the Skin Care section.
